LAE, 4 June 2026 – The Australian Government, through the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program (DAP), has provided more than K200,000 worth of support to Ungwimela Primary School in Menyamya District, Morobe Province, including solar lighting, school desks and water tanks.
Australian Consul-General in Lae, Brenton Kanowski, said the project would help improve learning conditions and student wellbeing.
“Australia is proud to support Ungwimela Primary School through the Direct Aid Program. Access to lighting, safe water and quality classroom furniture helps create a better learning environment for students and teachers alike,” Mr Kanowski said.
“This is one of many Direct Aid Program projects delivered each year to grassroots communities across Morobe Province and throughout Papua New Guinea, reflecting Australia’s commitment to supporting locally identified development priorities.”

School principal Elizah Ikwaye welcomed the assistance and thanked the Australian Government for its support.
“On behalf of our students, staff and community, I sincerely thank the Australian Government for this valuable support. These improvements will make a real difference to our school and help provide a better future for our children,” Mr Ikwaye said.
Australia continues to work closely with district and provincial authorities, as well as national government agencies, to respond to local needs and support grassroots communities wherever possible.
