LAE, Friday, 8 May 2026 — The Australian Government is supporting improved education outcomes in the remote Menyamya District of Morobe Province through practical infrastructure upgrades at Ungwimela Primary School.
More than K200,000 in funding has been committed through the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program to improve learning conditions for students, teachers and the wider community.
The funding agreement was recently signed in Lae by Australian Consul-General Brenton Kanowski and Ungwimela Primary School Principal Mr Elizah Ikwye.
The support package will fund the installation of solar lighting, provision of school desks, and water tanks for the school.
The project is expected to create a safer and more inclusive learning environment for students while improving access to clean water and strengthening teaching and learning conditions in one of Morobe Province’s remote districts.

Australian Consul-General Brenton Kanowski said Australia remained committed to supporting practical community-led projects that delivered lasting benefits for local people.
“Through the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program, Australia is proud to support priorities identified by local communities,” Mr Kanowski said.
“Solar lighting, improved water access and classroom furniture will make a tangible difference for students and teachers at Ungwimela Primary School.”
Minister for Mining and Member for Menyamya, Hon. Solen Loifa MP, welcomed the partnership and said the project addressed key community priorities.

“This support responds directly to priorities identified by our communities,” Minister Loifa said.
“Improving school infrastructure is an investment in our children, our families and the future of Menyamya.
“We value Australia’s partnership in helping deliver practical outcomes for our people.”
Minister Loifa said the initiative marked an important milestone for the district.
“This is the first of its kind for Menyamya District and we are looking forward to a lasting relationship,” he said.
The initiative builds on Australia’s broader partnership with Menyamya District, including recent cooperation with churches and community organisations to strengthen health, education and community services in rural and remote communities.
