Minister Boito Urges Unified Action to Build a Resilient Agricultural Sector Through Public-Private Partnerships

Lae, Morobe Province – Friday, 11 April 2025 – Minister for Agriculture Hon. John Boito today addressed the landmark National Agriculture Sector Public-Private Partnership Conference in Lae with a passionate call for unity, collaboration, and follow-through on commitments made over the course of the five-day event.

Addressing a packed conference room at Lae International Hotel, Minister Boito commended all participants—from industry leaders and policy-makers to rural farmers and development partners—for engaging in open dialogue to shape the future of agriculture in Papua New Guinea.

“This conference has reminded us all that partnerships are not just possible – they are essential,” Minister Boito said. “Public-private collaboration must be the foundation on which we build a modern, resilient, and inclusive agricultural sector.”

Held from 7–11 April under the theme “Driving Agricultural Growth Through Public-Private Partnerships,” the conference brought together stakeholders from across the spectrum of PNG’s agriculture sector to forge new alliances, identify shared challenges, and chart a path forward in line with the National Agriculture Sector Plan (NASP) 2024–2033.

Prime Minister’s Support Welcomed

Minister Boito paid special tribute to Prime Minister Hon. James Marape for his attendance and unwavering support throughout the conference.

“Prime Minister, we know how full your schedule is, and your decision to join us here in Lae reflects your deep commitment to agriculture and to the people who depend on it every day,” he said. “On behalf of everyone present – thank you.”

The Prime Minister’s participation underscored the importance the Government places on agriculture as a vehicle for national self-reliance, job creation, and sustainable development.

Private Sector Praised as Engine of Growth

In his closing remarks, Minister Boito highlighted the indispensable role of the private sector in driving agricultural development.

“To our partners in the private sector – your continued investment, innovation, and employment creation across the value chain – from farm gate to export – are not only expanding agricultural output but also strengthening the national economy,” he said.

Boito acknowledged the frank contributions from business representatives who outlined operational difficulties, market access barriers, and logistical challenges faced on the ground. He assured them their voices had been heard.

“The issues and challenges raised have been taken seriously and have been noted by Secretary Dr. Sergie Bang and our Agriculture Government Team. These matters will be presented to the Prime Minister for his consideration and necessary response and action,” he said.

Public Sector Contributions Acknowledged

The Minister also extended heartfelt thanks to the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, led by Secretary Dr. Sergie Bang, for the successful coordination of the event.

“Your leadership and that of your team have made this conference possible. Congratulations on a job well done,” Boito said.

He commended the CEOs and Managers of the commodity boards for their technical leadership and institutional memory, and acknowledged the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council (CIMC) for its meticulous documentation of the conference proceedings.

“A special thank you to CIMC, who have diligently recorded and compiled conference notes at the end of each session. Your efforts ensure that what has been shared and discussed here will be captured, remembered, and actioned,” he noted.

A Call to Action

Minister Boito concluded with a rallying call for continued cooperation and urgency in implementing the outcomes of the conference.

“As we wrap up this important national event, let us take with us the spirit of cooperation that has filled this venue,” he said. “Let us take action on the commitments we’ve made. And most importantly, let us continue working together – government and private sector – to unlock the full potential of agriculture in Papua New Guinea.”

He reaffirmed that agriculture remains the backbone of the country’s rural economy and holds the key to inclusive national development.

“When we strengthen agriculture, we are not only strengthening our economy – we are strengthening the foundation of our nation.”

The conference marked a significant step toward operationalising the NASP 2024–2033 through actionable public-private sector strategies and reflects the Marape Government’s broader vision of empowering local industries and reducing import dependency as PNG celebrates 50 years of nationhood in 2025.

“Thank you all once again for your dedication, your contributions, and your commitment to the future of agriculture in this country,” Boito said in conclusion. “God bless you all, and God bless Papua New Guinea.”
